300 DPI vs 600 DPI for Old Photos: Which Should You Choose?
For ordinary viewing, sharing and same-size reprints, 300 dpi is often enough. For important family photographs that may be cropped, enlarged, restored or preserved for future use, 600 dpi usually provides more flexibility. Neither setting can create detail that does not exist in the original print.

The choice is not really between a “bad” scan and a “good” scan. A properly made 300 dpi scan of a standard photograph can look excellent on a computer, television, digital frame or phone and can produce a good same-size reprint.
Scanning at 600 dpi doubles the number of pixels captured along each dimension. That gives you four times as many total pixels, which becomes useful when you crop, enlarge or perform detailed restoration work.

What DPI Actually Means
Resolution determines how many pixels are captured from the print
When scanning photographs, the setting commonly called DPI describes how densely the physical photograph is sampled. Technically, PPI — pixels per inch — is often the more precise term for the resulting digital image, but scanning companies and scanner software commonly use DPI.
The practical concept is simple: doubling the scanning resolution doubles the number of pixels captured across every inch of the original photograph.

When 300 DPI Is Enough
There are plenty of projects where 300 dpi makes sense
Higher resolution is not automatically better in every practical situation. The intended use of the finished file matters.
300 dpi provides plenty of pixels for ordinary screen viewing.
Family photographs displayed on phones, tablets, computers, televisions and digital frames generally do not require a 600 dpi source scan to look sharp.
300 dpi is a standard high-quality printing target.
A 4×6 photograph scanned at 300 dpi produces a 1200×1800-pixel file, enough to produce another 4×6 print at approximately 300 pixels per inch.
Smaller files can matter when scanning tens of thousands of photos.
A 600 dpi scan contains roughly four times the pixel count of a 300 dpi scan. Across a very large archive, that difference affects storage, upload times, downloads and backups.
Some companies charge less for 300 dpi.
If the collection is enormous and the intended use is simple viewing and sharing, the savings from a lower-resolution service can be meaningful.
When 600 DPI Is Better
600 dpi becomes valuable when you want options later
The strongest argument for 600 dpi is not that every photograph suddenly looks twice as sharp. It is that the digital file contains more samples of the original print and therefore gives you more room to work.
You can throw away more of the photograph and still retain useful pixels.
Perhaps the original is a group photograph but decades later you want a portrait of one person. A higher-resolution scan gives you considerably more latitude to crop into that person.
More source pixels support larger prints.
A 4×6 scanned at 600 dpi produces approximately 2400×3600 pixels. That gives you far more flexibility for producing an enlargement than the 1200×1800 pixels captured at 300 dpi.
Restoration software benefits from having more source information.
Scratch repair, detailed retouching, localized color work and other restoration tasks can be easier when the working file contains more pixels.
The smaller the photograph, the more useful additional resolution becomes.
A tiny wallet-size print simply does not contain many pixels when scanned at 300 dpi. Increasing the scanning resolution gives you a larger digital working file.
You may not know how the photograph will be used twenty years from now.
An archival project is different from scanning a picture for today's Facebook post. Storage can be expanded later. The original scan cannot gain detail that was never captured in the first place.
An Important Limitation
600 dpi cannot manufacture detail that isn't in the photograph
This is where resolution marketing can become misleading.
An old print may be soft because the camera was out of focus. It may contain visible film grain. It may be a copy of another photograph. It may have been printed from a poor negative or produced on textured photographic paper.
Scanning that photograph at increasingly extreme resolutions does not recreate information that was never present in the physical print.
Higher Is Not Infinite
1200, 2400 or 4800 dpi does not automatically mean a better scan of a paper photograph.
At some point, additional resolution may primarily capture the physical structure, grain or surface texture of the print rather than meaningful photographic detail. The useful ceiling depends on the original.
What About Really Old Photos?
Age alone does not determine the correct resolution
A photograph from 1940 does not automatically need a higher scanning resolution than a photograph from 1990. Size, sharpness, print quality, condition and intended use are more important than the date.
Small originals deserve special consideration.
A sharp 2×3 photograph can benefit significantly from higher-resolution scanning because its physical dimensions provide relatively little image area.
An 8×10 already produces a large digital file at 300 dpi.
At 300 dpi, an 8×10 becomes approximately 2400×3000 pixels. Whether 600 dpi adds useful value depends on the quality of the original and what you intend to do with it.
Handling may matter more than resolution.
A brittle, curled or damaged photograph requires safe physical handling before resolution even enters the conversation. The best 600 dpi scan is worthless if the original is damaged while being fed through inappropriate equipment.

Why?
You are doubling resolution in two directions.
Twice as many pixels horizontally multiplied by twice as many vertically equals four times the total pixel count. That is also why 600 dpi files can become substantially larger.
Our Recommendation
For a one-time family archive, we generally favor 600 dpi
There is nothing wrong with 300 dpi. In fact, for many ordinary uses it is all you need.
But digitizing a family archive is often a project people hope never to repeat. Photographs may be divided among relatives after scanning, originals may deteriorate, and nobody knows exactly how the files will be used decades from now.
For those reasons, when the additional cost is reasonable and the originals justify it, 600 dpi provides useful insurance against future needs.
Simple Decision Rule
Choose 300 dpi for convenience. Choose 600 dpi for flexibility.
If you mainly want to view and share the pictures, 300 dpi is enough for most standard prints. If you are creating a long-term family archive and want room for cropping, enlargement and restoration, 600 dpi is usually the stronger choice.
